What I’m Reading
I am reviewing this book for a blog tour that starts next Monday. I’ll post the official review then, but I have started the book and so far it is good but a little different than I expected. The writer is somewhat sarcastic and I like that. He sounds like a real guy who is writing the way he talks, and that’s good for me. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
If you are interested, you can buy the back at amazon.com
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Toler at a Conference last weekend and I was very impressed. I know he has been writing books for a long time but I hadn’t read any of them. And since he gave me a copy of his newest book, I thought I would read it and post a review just as soon as I’m finished with it. However, if you already know that you are a Stan Toler fan, you can purchase this book at Amazon.com
I am re-reading this book for a Sunday School class I teach. We are actually studying this book. I’ve got to tell you, it is even more powerful the second time. This book will challenge you and your faith to become everything God wants it to be. Read it, then study it. You can buy it at Amazon.
I’ve read this book, Heights of Delight by Dick Eastman, twice already but, as they say, three times a charm. I can’t help but refere back to it and I’ve written on most every page. This is book 1 of a 3 part series on Intercessory Worship. You can buy the book here.
Pathways of Delight is book 2 of the Intercessory Worship Series by Dick Eastman. I thought the first one was powerful, but this is good stuff. I’m re-reading them both and using them as a reference for the series I’m doing on Prayer and Worship. You can buy the book here.
The Shack is an incredible, but a different type of book. If you aren’t afraid to have your preconceptions challenged, then this is the book for you. It will cause you to really think about your relationship with God and how He views your relationship with Him. You can buy the book here.
Renegade is book 3 of 4 in a series by Ted Dekker. It all started with the Circle Trilogy books a few years ago and keeps growing. This 4 book series is categorized as Teen Fiction but it is worth reading if you’ve kept up with the others. Make sure you’ve read the Circle Trilogy and Showdown etc.. or you will be struggling to keep up. You can buy it here.
Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell was a powerful but controversial book. (Read my review of it under Book Reviews) It was great, but had some things in it you have to really weigh in your spirit. Some of the controversy was how he phrased things, some of it is weird theology. Not heretical just different. Read it and weigh it against the Word. It is worth the money.
In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson is a fantastic book so far. We are currently reading it together in our Young Adult class at church. We are only on chapter 3 but it is touching lives already. I’ll write a full review when I’ve finished it.
Searching For God Knows What by Don Miller is another one of those books that critics love to hate. It is controversial in the same way Velvet Elvis and Lord Save Us From Your Followers is.
If you read Blue Like Jazz then you are familiar with Don Miller and probably want to read this just because you know he wrote it. He is a great down to earth writer. He shares from his heart and isn’t afraid to bare his sould to his readers.
Miller talks about God not using formulas in the Bible and why that is important for us as believers. If you are looking for a great challenging read, pick up Searching For God Knows What.
I just finished the new book by Ted Dekker, Sinner, and to me it was one of his best –definitely the best in the Showdown Series.
Sinner is the latest book dealing with Johnny, Darcy, Billy and Marsuvees Black. If those names ring a bell then pick up this book, if not then read the others first. But of the last three –Showdown, Saint and Sinner — this one is by far the most entertaining and meaningful.
It is right on track with what we are facing as a nation. He goes deep into the psyche of American “tolerance” and reveals it’s true nature. I highly recommend this book, but like I said before, read the others first.
